This chapter presents excerpts from The Gospel Message (1796) by Charles Simeon, a prominent evangelical in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Simeon gained a reputation for extreme piety and active support for missions. Aside from helping to found the Church Missionary Society in 1799, he became involved with the Religious Tract Society, the Colonial and Continental Church Society, the British and Foreign Bible Society, and the London Society for Promoting Christianity among the Jews. Simeon also regularly preached the gospel message with the hope that his sermon would humble the sinner, exalt the Savior, and promote holiness.
