This chapter presents excerpts from James Hervey's Theron and Aspasio: Or, a Series of Dialogues and Letters, upon the Most Important and Interesting Subjects (1755). Hervey, an Anglican clergyman, wrote books that appealed to elite tastes while teaching evangelical doctrines. As a writer, he sought to promote evangelical Calvinism using polite rhetoric. Theron and Aspasio is a theological enterprise presented in the form of seventeen dialogues and twelve letters between the genteel Theron, who is shepherded to conversion by his grave acquaintance, Aspasio. Hervey defended the Calvinistic notion of imputed righteousness and upheld Christianity as a rational religion suitable to polite standards.
