Peter Salovey reflects on his most underappreciated work: a paper on emotional intelligence co-authored with John D. Mayer. Published in 1990 in Imagination, Cognition, and Personality, the study examined a set of skills hypothesized to contribute to the accurate appraisal and expression of emotion in oneself and others, the effective regulation of emotion in self and others, and the use of feelings to motivate, plan, and achieve in one's life. Salovey and Mayer also proposed a conceptual definition of emotional intelligence as an individual's capacity to reason about emotions and to process emotional information in order to enhance reasoning.
