Robert B. Cialdini describes his most underappreciated work: his research on littering in a public place as an unobtrusive measure of political attitude. Caldini, in collaboration with Don Baumann, tested whether the act of retaining or discarding a printed message might reflect affective positivity or negativity toward that message. Despite offering a relatively convenient, inexpensive, valid, and nonreactive measure of political attitude, the littering technique has gone unnoticed and unused.
