This chapter examines how both Levites and prophets carried juridical authority as YHWH's sacral agents. It first provides an overview of biblical law and jurisprudence in Israel before turning to a definition of the term ‘judge’ (Hebrew šophet) and what is implied with the term šophet. It then considers how šophet brought together different streams of tradition through its application to Samuel. It also explores the difference between ‘judging’ as a vehicle for legislative justice and the type of ‘judges’ in the book of Judges before concluding with an analysis of the narratives depicting the tensions between Samuel and Saul as a reflection of the competing forms of leadership between Levites and chieftains as judges.
