This chapter reviews the book La storia della Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa: in una prospettiva comparative (2008), edited by Daniele Menozzi and Mario Rosa. The authors focus on the Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa, originally a branch of the French École Normale in Paris, in particular its internal life and its relation to the larger world. The essays in the book tackle a wide range of topics, from Italy's higher education in general and its relationship to the country's political system between 1950 and 1998, to the Scuola Normale's problems after World War II, student demands for a greater role in school affairs in the 1960s, and the institution's medical college during the Fascist period.
