This introductory chapter sets out the book's purpose, namely to discuss the importance of settlement fortifications and Archaic city walls, how the Greek poleis were normally fortified, and the various complications in understanding the sources of research. An important question concerns the history and development of the early polis along with the role of city walls in its emergence. An overview of the subsequent chapters is presented.
