This chapter traces the biographical development of wetland archaeology, from Ferdinand Keller to the advent of ‘New Archaeology’, explaining the reasons why, despite its great potential to make a significant contribution to mainstream archaeological thought, wetland archaeology has been experiencing an odd process of isolation in some countries. It also clarifies some aspects of wetland archaeological research that are often misunderstood. Finally, it discusses a crucial aspect of wetland archaeology, which extends far beyond the purpose of the discipline but influences it directly: wetland preservation.
