This book attempts to reconstruct the evolutionary history of anatomical characters to which previous studies attributed systematic significance, as well as to highlight the systematic significance of new characters identified during the course of the present investigation. The approach stressed throughout was the discovery of synapomorphies — derived character states shared by two or more taxa and their most recent common ancestor. This objective complements the approach of Horn et al. (2009), who addressed the evolutionary significance of patterns of recurrent evolution among suites of leaf anatomical characters. This aspect of character evolution — the recurrence of similar structure — is termed homoplasy. To accurately dissect and quantify structural homoplasy, molecular phylogenetic data are needed for ancestral state reconstructions. This chapter presents and discusses the results of the reconstructions of eight major anatomical characters in the context of the most recent and comprehensive palm family phylogeny.
