This chapter examines the influence of male and female gender on religious identities, and explores aspects of the complex idea of ritual purity. It shows that the male-female divide entails many consequences, not only for family life, economics, and social organization but also for identity, religious behaviour, and some attitudes to death. Gender differences also furnish clearly nuanced axes when the nature of the embodiment of social values is discussed with men and women in societies with different religious duties and expectations allied with their complementary identities.

Keywords:   gender, religious identity, ritual purity, emotions, religious behaviour, death
