This chapter examines the correlates of happiness in large population samples around the world, focusing on Latin America, Russia, and the OECD countries. It also presents a bird's eye view of happiness in Central Asia, Cuba, Eastern Europe, and Africa, as well as human well-being in Afghanistan where people have to cope with turmoil. The chapter shows that the determinants of happiness are consistent across countries, regardless of their economic development level. Some traits that seem to be specific to particular cohorts and countries or regions are highlighted.

Keywords:   happiness, Latin America, Russia, OECD countries, Eastern Europe, Africa, human well-being, Afghanistan, turmoil, economic development
