This chapter surveys the wide variety of history texts produced in Korea from the fifteenth century through the eighteenth, how — and why — they were produced. It focuses on the Korean use of history written in the Chinese style to define a distinctive Korean identity, and to settle Korean political scores. In Chosŏn Korea, writing history was usually a political act. That was as true at the founding of the dynasty in the late fourteenth century as it was four hundred years later, when that dynasty was moving into its final century.

Keywords:   Korean historical writing, historiography, history texts, Chinese style, Korean identity
