(p.139) 12 Pamphlets
The Oxford History of the Irish Book, Volume IV

Charles Benson

Siobhán Fitzpatrick

Oxford University Press

This chapter discusses pamphlet production in nineteenth-century Ireland. Pamphlets constituted an important role in print production through their involvement in major political issues such as Catholic emancipation, national education, the land war, and home rule. This could also be said of other religious affairs such as the disestablishment of the Church of Ireland and the religious revival in Ulster in 1859. Sermons were printed with almost as much enthusiasm as pamphlets during the eighteenth century. Tract societies, also, of all denominations produced heavily subsidized booklets.
