This chapter focuses on Israel's war against Hamas during the years 2008–2009. It begins by looking at Hamas's attempt to build a force similar to that of Hizballah in Lebanon before turning to a discussion of its defensive strategy against the Israel Defense Forces. It then considers Hamas's ceasefire with Israel that eventually collapsed, the violence that characterized the 2008–2009 war between Israel and Gaza, and Israel's intelligence-driven operation dubbed Cast Lead along with suffering it inflicted on Gazan civilians.
