This chapter examines the image, reception, and reputation of Abraham Lincoln in East Asia. It analyzes the concrete influences of Lincoln in China and Japan by tracing his contact with the East Asian region during his term as U.S. president. It describes the images of Lincoln constructed and adapted for different purposes such as a political tool of opposition party leaders, as role model for promoting an industrious spirit and democratic values and as a means of criticizing American politics and foreign policy.
