This chapter examines the image, reception, and reputation of Abraham Lincoln in Latin America. It describes the three representations of Lincoln associated with different historical periods. These include Lincoln's image as a nation-builder during the Civil War decade, as a natural man in the late nineteenth century and as americanista or an advocate of shared modern republican values throughout the Americas during the era of the Good Neighbor Policy in the 1930s and 1940s. It also discusses Latin American interpretation of his assassination as martyrdom which prompted public expressions of mourning, especially in Cuba, Argentina, and Chile.
