This chapter considers what a responsible voice teacher should be teaching in a scientific age. In principle, what a responsible voice teacher does in this scientific age is not appreciably different from what their counterparts have been doing for several centuries, most of which have been replete with teachers who considered themselves enlightened and scientific. That is why it is particularly important for singing teachers to be cognizant of developments in related fields, and to understand their potential for enhancing voice teaching. There is a prevalent opinion that in past centuries singers had little interest in science. That viewpoint is not supported by historical review. A case could be made that teachers of singing have always wanted to know how the vocal instrument functions. Rather than being a new idea, such interest in the available factual information characterizes the mainstream of historic vocal pedagogy. One main goal of teaching in this and any age should be to do no harm. Every aspect of vocal technique must be in agreement with what is known about healthy vocal function.
