As her older sister formally testified, Thérèse was in spiritual “dryness” (a listless irresponsiveness to Christian calling) for most of her nine years in Carmel. As trainer of novices, she also faced the challenge of other sisters’ trials and doubts. As humility kept her aware of her inferiority to the other sisters, these clouds within the Carmel helped her on her way to her own darkness.
