Thérèse grew up with the Bible, but she made it her own in the Carmel. Without lexical aids and scholarly or priestly guidance, she arrived at her own insights into what Jesus was demanding of the Christian soul. Her writing on both Testaments reveals profound affective and intuitive insight, extraordinary in a young and not well educated woman. She is a lone pioneer of her times, learning to interpret scripture for herself and for the assistance of others.
