Chapter 1 begins by defining schizophrenia for the educated layman. It describes the conceptual approach of the book and highlights new findings in psychology and neuroscience that served as inspirations for the production of the text. The book addresses the question of why progress in the field has been so poor to date and discusses the challenges faced by researchers in the area of outcome in schizophrenia. Additional sections wrestle with the questions of of how to define improvement in the disorder, whether outcome in schizophrenia is universally poor, and how to improve outcome.
