Developing the Capacities to Constructively Engage Difference
The educational value of diversityis not achieved by the mere presence of a diverse student body but depends on the extent of interaction across differences. This chapter examines the role of campus cultureon reducing intergroup bias and promoting intergroup relations.Particular attention is directed to policies and practices with regard to residential and social life.Both the multicultural and social identity perspectives are considered as sources of guidance to issues such as self-segregation and promoting intergroup dialogue.The impact of engagement with diversity is believed to be especially important during the late adolescent period of development when experimentation in the process of forming a sense of personal and social identity is occurring.Evidence is evaluated regarding the claim that promoting interaction among students from diverse racial and ethnic backgrounds, through both the curriculum and informal interactions,positively impacts students’ modes of thought and intellectual engagement and social growth
