Popular Punishment: On the Normative Significance of Public Opinion

Jesper Ryberg and Julian V. Roberts

Abstract

Should public opinion determine—or even influence—sentencing policy and practice? A simple question, perhaps, but one which conceals complex theoretical and methodological challenges. The present volume is evidence of the complexity of the issue and the importance of the topic to scholars of different disciplines and practitioners across a variety of jurisdictions.

Keywords: criminal justice, penal theory, public opinion, punishment, sentencing
