Multiple players in response to clergy abuse allegations each have a significant role. Bishops are the central focus, but the Vatican and the Vicar for the Clergy are also involved as well as the diocesan staff. Central roles are also played by the accused abuser and any defense counsel or advocate, as well as the victim, the victim‘s advocate, and the victim‘s family. Other roles are taken by the liability insurer and news media. If done well, the case of an abuse allegation can be handled effectively; but done badly, scandal and suits and bankruptcies have ruined careers and reputations.
