The Boston abuse publicity and resulting crisis for the U.S. Catholic Church led to norms to handle the future claim of clergy sexual abuse. The National Review Board was established, but some dioceses refused to act in accordance. The chapter describes the “Essential Norms” (also known as “Dallas Norms”) and their role going forward in how the U.S. Church approaches sex abuse claims. It also discusses the roles of the USCCB Office of Children and Youth Protection and the USCCB‘s Committee for the Protection of Children and Young People. Finally it describes the commissioning and results of the John Jay College Report.
