This introductory chapter ponders whether relationships between people affect physical and/or mental health. This is the central question of the book. Evidence may suggest that the answer should be “yes” but the book aims to look at what causes this simple conclusion and analyzes whether it is an accurate one. The question, as most questions do, brings up many other questions such as: what is meant by “relationship” between people? Can an interpersonal relationship influence health? How can we measure an influence on health? How can we disentangle the various influences on health? If we switch the question around, can health influence relationships?
