In addition to reemphasizing major points discussed throughout the previous chapters, the conclusion also examines what the guerrilla PDLP failed to enact in its failure to overthrow the PRI and its defeat in the face of counterinsurgent terror: the creation of a poor people’s state. Communiqués, transcribed speeches, declassified security documents, and interviews with PDLP guerrillas permit an analysis that outlines the broad contours of what the PDLP envisioned as a revolutionary poor people’s state. Such a vision contained alternative imaginings of the world rooted in persistent and unredeemed peasant longings. Such longings, despite the military defeat of the PDLP and the “Dirty War,” persist.
