This chapter examines what the basic considerations are for the creation of a prosthetic device for the blind, what kinds of experiments have been carried out to assess what kind of devices might be workable, and what kinds of algorithms will have to be generated to successfully convert visual signals for brain activation. The chapter has four sections. Section A describes the basic considerations for the creation of visual prosthetic devices. Section B describes research for the creation of retinal prostheses. Section C examines research possibilities for creating prosthetic devices based on electrical stimulation of area V1. Section D provides a summary for the chapter.
