Years before the Muslim Brotherhood would re-emerge within Egyptian society, an oft-forgotten organization named Shabab al-Islam signaled the return of Islamic activism. Arising out of the open space actively cultivated and promoted by the Anwar al-Sadat regime, this student organization advanced a broadly Islamized social and political program, articulated generally in the Islamic modernist tradition. Though it infused the public discourse with fresh discussions on the place of religion in the state and society, and also joined in the student protests of 1972–1973, the organization ultimately succumbed to internal structural weaknesses and external pressures, but proved to be a sign of things to come.
