The authors find, across a large number of experiments, that source memory for faces of cheaters was enhanced in comparison to other types of faces (Bell & Buchner, 2010a; Bell et al., 2012; Buchner et al., 2009). These findings are consistent with an evolutionary analysis of the cognitive prerequisites of cooperation. If seen in isolation, these findings could be viewed as evidence for a highly specific cheater recognition module that has co-evolved with human cooperation. However, before drawing such strong conclusions, it has to be empirically tested whether the effect is specific for cheating.
