As Bondmania begins to grip the globe, the film producers trust John Barry for all of the music, including the song: Barry collaborates with London friends and fellow songwriters Anthony Newley and Leslie Bricusse to write the title song for Goldfinger. Barry hires Welsh-born Shirley Bassey to belt out the tune, which helps to propel the soundtrack album to no. 1 in the U.S. in the spring of 1965, topping both The Beatles and the Mary Poppins soundtrack. Nearly all of Barry's dramatic underscore is based on the song, with variations that range from romantic to powerful.
