The “flow” has been one of the key metaphors used to describe the increasingly rapid movement of goods, people, ideas, and images in the age of globalization. This chapter focuses on Chinese cinema during the first years of “reform and opening to the outside world,” and it argues that even before the emergence of Fifth Generation directors like Zhang Yimou and Chen Kaige, Chinese filmmakers were concerned with the implications of these transnational cultural flows. In both the film theory of this transitional era and the work of Fourth Generation directors, the cinema of the early 1980s reveals a changing social and artistic landscape in which the modern city has overtaken the countryside as the site of revolutionary consciousness. It also displays a new cinematic modernism that begins to replace a socialist realist aesthetic.
