The quality of measurement is quantified by validity and reliability, and measurements experts universally agree that validity is pre-eminent. This chapter provides an in-depth discussion of modern validity theory and is arguably the most important content area. It is informed by the influential work of Samuel Messick and aligns with the Standards for Educational and Psychological Testing. The chapter begins by contrasting modern validity theory with classical definitions that are still commonly used in social work research. It then summarizes the different sources of validity evidence, sources of invalidity, and the process of integrating validity evidence.
