Abstract

This book presents the first ethnographic study of the meaning and experience of chanting Torah among contemporary Jews, cross-denominationally, in the United States. Focusing on the experiences of Ashkenazi Jews at the beginning of the twenty-first century, this book examines why, and how, growing numbers of American Jews see the performance of biblical text as meaningful and authentic religious expression.
