This book is concerned with the unidirectional diffusion of a new grammatical pattern over a growing number of environments as it applies particularly to change within the English system of complementation. This introductory chapter discusses what constitutes diffusional change, the specific diffusional changes in the domain of complementation, and the theoretical questions these changes raise, as well as the solutions this study intends to develop. It concludes with a brief discussion of some limitations on the present study and an overview of the subsequent chapters.
