This chapter presents a brief biographical sketch of Slobodan Milošević and describes his political rise and downfall. Milošević rose to prominence in the 1980s amid the economic crisis, rising nationalist sentiment, and political paralysis that were precursors to the Yugoslav war. For many, his legal responsibility cannot be evaluated in isolation from his role in the whole process of Yugoslavia's destruction.
