By reviewing challenges and obstacles along with strategies to overcome barriers to addressing bullying, this chapter sets the stage for approaches to prevention and intervention. The chapter includes an overview of the secrecy and shame involved in bullying, which contributes to significant underreporting; and of the benefits and risks when children or youth disclose to an adult. Practice principles to help recognize and address challenges for effective intervention and treatment include: 1) recognize that defining and naming bullying is complex and confusing; 2) listen, understand, and validate the child’s experience; 3) Ensure that there is empathy for the victimized child; 4) recognize the impact of the whole range of bullying behaviours; 5) manage the paradox of naming behaviours bullying while addressing underlying biases; 6) recognize and rectify misconceptions and stereotypes about how victimized children present; and 7) help children disclose.
