In March 2006, Mohammad Taheri-Azar drove through campus at the University of North Carolina, trying to run over students with a rented SUV. His motive, he said, was to terrorize the American people in retaliation for U.S. interventions in the Middle East. If terrorism is as easy as this, why don't we see more of it? This chapter examines figures such as the rate of terrorist fatalities (fewer than 100 out of 150,000 deaths each day worldwide) and reviews complaints by Islamist revolutionaries about their recruitment difficulties. Small numbers of terrorists can have an inordinate impact on world history, but Americans and others should set aside their panic and put terrorist violence in perspective.
