This chapter examines the experiences and challenges of lesbian, gay, or bisexual youths from two perspectives. It begins with a theoretical perspective on sexual identity development to place the development of sexual identity within the larger context of identity development and adaptation. It then reviews what is known about the experiences and challenges of lesbian, gay, or bisexual youths from an ecological perspective that involves the self (including neuroscience), family, peers, and schools. Next, it examines the positive and negative influences of the various experiences on the youths’ identity development, health, and well-being. The chapter concludes by identifying what remains unknown or in need of additional research.
