This chapter focuses on the unique needs and vulnerabilities of youth in the context of the HIV/AIDS epidemic. It reviews available actions and interventions to tackle these problems, with a focus on four broad types: interventions targeted at behavior modification to improve health and access to health care (for example, HIV/AIDS information and education; interventions to improve sexual and reproductive health; interventions to encourage HIV testing; interventions to improve access to treatment and care; and support for HIV-infected youth); and social interventions to help young adults establish sustainable livelihoods in a safe and supportive environment (for example, tuition support and vocational training). It illustrates the effectiveness of available interventions with real examples from global and regional perspectives, identifies remaining gaps in the existing evidence, and concludes with recommendations for future actions and interventions.
