This chapter opens the ethnographic examination of the transition from spiritual to modernist to post-national ideologies of language, identity, nation, and State in francophone Canada through a discussion of the political economic construction of the idea of the French Canadian nation in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries as Catholic, French-speaking, tied to the land and the North, but not to political territory. It discusses in particular the role of the Catholic Church and secular élite organizations, notably a secret society, l’Ordre de Jacques Cartier (1926–1965).
