This chapter investigates the structure of the left periphery and V2. It outlines a detailed map of the CP domain of Medieval Romance and argues that one of the syntactic positions traditionally recognized before the finite verb can be split into two separate slots, one devoted to thematic elements and one devoted to focused elements. However, only one of the two positions can normally be filled by lexical material.

Keywords:   left periphery, V2, CP domain, Medieval Romance, thematic elements, focused elements, syntactic positions
