This chapter on different types of wh-items in German varieties shows that some complex wh-phrases behave as Topics, some of which have operator status. There is a scale with respect to the operator properties of wh-items, with what being a pure operator, while wh-items including a restrictor have Topic-like properties. The detailed empirical observations contained in this work can only be accounted for inside a cartographic approach to the left periphery.
