(p.3) 1 Standing at the Threshold
Foundations of Neuroeconomic Analysis

Paul W. Glimcher

Oxford University Press

Early 21st-century economists, psychologists, and biologists all strive to answer a common question, but answer it in unconnected ways. Social scientists and natural scientists define the sources of our actions in such different ways that many insist the theories and insights of the other groups are, in principle, of no interest. To make this incredibly important point clear, this chapter presents an example involving a pair of humans making a single set of real choices. It then tries to understand those choices using the tools first of economics, then of psychology, and then of biology.
