Authenticity and the Examined Life

Authenticity and the Examined Life

(p.124) 6 Authenticity and the Examined Life
On Emotions

Jerome Neu

Oxford University Press

We are urged to be authentic, to be true to ourselves. But what is the relevant self, what makes an emotion, desire, or other characteristic “true,” what are the applicable standards of value, and how are ideals of self-knowledge and self-expression to be reconciled with ideals of restraint and self-control? Are the arbitrary whims of the self to be regarded as the ultimate source of value and their fulfillment always to be prized? The insights of Austin and Hampshire are utilized in considering what contrasts and what correspondences are crucial to the understanding of authenticity, and the views of Walton in regard to the nature of real emotion and of Sartre in regard to the source of moral standards are critiqued.
