After Lorenzo’s death his collection passed down through the Medici family and was inherited by Alessandro il Moro. Upon his assassination in 1536, his possessions, including the Tazza, were appropriated by his widow, Margaret, illegitimate daughter of the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V. Soon thereafter she married into the Farnese family. During her lifetime she held on tightly to the Tazza, which linked her to her beloved first husband and happy days in Florence. In her will she meticulously specified how her treasures were to be passed through her descendants. Thus the bowl acquired its name Tazza Farnese.

Keywords:   Alessandro de’ Medici, il Moro, Margaret of Parma, Margaret of Austria, Farnese family, Palazzo Farnese, Alessandro Farnese, Fulvio Orsini, spy, antiquities collecting, Peter Paul Rubens, Philipp von Stosch
