Towards a Logic for ‘Alas’
This chapter is devoted to a formal, model-theoretic presentation of a ‘logic’ for ‘alas’. Given the approach to ‘alas’ in terms of bias, in chapter four, the ‘logic’ in question reflects the idea of ‘meaning guaranteed’ inferential steps, independently, to some extent, from the traditional notion of ‘truth-preserving’ arguments. The framework presented here appeals to the idea of ‘expressive validity’, and highlights some of its peculiar formal aspects. Sections five and six enrich the framework of expressive validity with the notion of an ‘expressive witness’ and with the introduction of a contrasting interjection, ‘hurray’.
