The Same-Number Non-Identity Problem

(p.77) 5 The Same-Number Non-Identity Problem
The Limits of Kindness

Caspar Hare

Oxford University Press

Standard solutions to Parfit’s ‘Same-Number Non-Identity Problem’ (the problem of whether, and if so why, other things equal, we are obliged to create a healthy child rather than a numerically distinct unhealthy child), and standard objections to those solutions, are surveyed. The strategy from Chapter 4 is extended. In typical non-identity cases, a decent person must, on pain of irrationality, create the healthy child.

Keywords:   non-identity problem, procreation, parfit, aggregation
