This chapter is an investigation into Dilthey's views on the foundation of the human sciences. It treats his hermeneutics, his concept of understanding, and concept of the Geisteswissenschaften. Special attention is paid to Dilthey's historical critique of reason. Chapter 8 also examines closely the controversial role of psychology in Dilthey's thought and intellectual development. One section examines Dilthey's dispute with the neo‐Kantians. Final sections treat his later philosophy of life, and his response to the charge of relativism.
