This chapter explores the classical collecting of Edward Perry Warren, best known for his eponymous ‘Warren Cup’, which features explicit images of Roman male–male sex; it argues that Warren intended the cup to be displayed as part of what Warren called his ‘paederastic evangel’: the creation of the classical departments at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, as a means of promoting the revival of Greek pederasty. Although, like other Victorian ‘Uranians’, Warren took inspiration from Greece, this chapter argues that Roman artefacts were fundamental to the construction and dissemination of Warren’s ideal, because of what he took to be their own diverse appropriation of Hellenism; Roman objects provided better examples for Warren’s aims than the extant Greek material. This chapter discusses the issue of the authenticity of artefacts for the reconstruction of the classical past, arguing that Warren believed the cup genuinely Roman.
