Chapter 11 examines other topics that fill out Simon’s biography and chart his final year more closely. The section traces the family vacation preferences, and the importance of vacations for intellectual workers. Another follows Simon’s postwar travels to North America for professional reasons. A third section describes his final year in 1956, which included a vacation trip to Sicily, his election to Cherwell’s chair on the latter’s retirement, and medical problems that surfaced shortly after his election. His death in October was an immense, unexpected shock for the scientific community.
